Practice quality at 7-to-9 matters more than practice volume. The drills below are the ones we keep going back to — short, scrappy, and built for the attention span you're actually working with. Pick three, rotate every 10-15 minutes, keep it moving.

Infield & Fielding Drills

1. The Crocodile Attack (Infield Mechanics)

  • Setup: Line up a small group of players. Coach stands 10-15 feet away with a bucket of tennis balls or soft-core baseballs.
  • Drill: Roll ground balls to each player. Instead of fielding normally, teach a "crocodile mouth" with the hands — glove is the bottom jaw on the ground, bare hand is the top jaw coming down on top of the ball to secure it.
  • Why it works: Gives kids a fun visual hook that naturally stops them from fielding one-handed or letting the ball bounce off their chest.

2. Clean Your Room (Agility & Footwork)

  • Setup: Divide a small section of infield or grass into two halves using a line of cones. Two players per side. Dump 10-15 soft training balls on each side.
  • Drill: On the whistle, players pick up one ball at a time from their "room" and throw it to the other side. Run for exactly 45 seconds. Fewest balls on your side wins.
  • Why it works: Pure cardio and quick-twitch reps. Forces sprinting, clean pickups, and throws with urgency.

3. No-Look Fly Balls (Outfield Confidence)

  • Setup: Players stand facing away from the coach. Coach calls a player's name and tosses a soft tennis or foam ball high into the air.
  • Drill: When their name is called, the player turns, locates the ball, tracks it, and catches with two hands.
  • Why it works: Most 7-9 year olds are genuinely afraid of getting hit by a high fly ball, so they shy away. Soft balls + a fast tracking reaction builds confidence without the fear.

4. The Tee-to-Fence Challenge (Driving the Ball)

  • Setup: Tee facing a chain-link fence or hitting net, 10-15 feet away.
  • Drill: 5 swings each. The goal is to hit a line drive that strikes the fence without bouncing first. Scoring: 1 point for a grounder, 3 points for a line drive into the fence, 0 points for a pop-up over the fence.
  • Why it works: Teaches kids to swing with a flat, powerful plane instead of scooping the ball into the air — which is where the weak pop-ups at this age come from.

5. Color Ball (Pitch Tracking)

  • Setup: Mark a dozen plastic practice balls or tennis balls with a permanent marker — half-red, half-blue, or solid primary colors. Behind a screen, front-toss to the batter.
  • Drill: As the ball is in the air, the batter calls out the color before they swing.
  • Why it works: Completely stops kids from swinging blind with their eyes closed or heads pulled out. Forces them to track the ball all the way to the bat.

6. Freeze Frame (Hitting Balance)

  • Setup: Traditional soft-toss or tee work.
  • Drill: After each swing, the player freezes their finish pose for 3 seconds like a statue. Falling backward, stumbling forward, or dropping the hands early costs a point.
  • Why it works: Kids at this age often swing so hard they lose their footing. This drill instantly builds lower-body stability and core strength.

Base Running & Teamwork Drills

7. The Base Race (Speed Conditioning)

  • Setup: Split the team into two even groups. Group A lines up at home plate. Group B lines up at second base.
  • Drill: On "Go!" the first runner from home runs around the bases back to home; the first runner from second runs all the way around back to second — at the same time. They literally race each other across the diamond. Tag the next teammate at the finish.
  • Why it works: Running laps is boring. Racing a teammate around the diamond is an adrenaline rush — and teaches proper base-rounding angles.

8. First-Base Relay (Catching & Throwing Accuracy)

  • Setup: Coach or volunteer at first base. Line of fielders at shortstop.
  • Drill: Roll a grounder to short. They field it cleanly and throw to first. If first base catches it, the team gets a point. Field clean but throw away? No point. Run it as a 2-minute team challenge to stack up points.
  • Why it works: Games at this age are decided by who can actually execute a throw to first. Builds target precision under pressure.

9. The Hot Potato Rundown (Defensive Awareness)

  • Setup: Two basemen 20 feet apart. Place a runner right in the middle.
  • Drill: Basemen throw the ball back and forth to tag the runner stuck in the middle (a classic pickle). The catcher can take no more than three steps with the ball before they must throw.
  • Why it works: Teaches young players to close down space, communicate, and handle basic rundown logic without panicking.
