
Most of a Little Leaguer's competitive development happens during the season — games, team practices, in-game adjustments. But most of their technique development happens in the off-season.
Why: in-season, you can't really overhaul a swing. There's a game on Saturday. The kid has to perform with what they've got. Mid-summer is not the time to ask a kid to feel a new load position.
Off-season is where you fix what the season showed you.
Here's the 12-week template that works for ages 10–12.
The structure: 3 four-week blocks
Block 1 — Recovery + reset (weeks 1–4)
If the season ended in July, this block is August.
Goal: rest the arm, reset the mind, stay athletic.
- No throwing or pitching. Zero. The arm needs the off time. This is non-negotiable.
- Other sports encouraged. Basketball, soccer, swimming, skating — pick one. Cross-training is good for an 11-year-old.
- Light hitting OK: 1–2 short tee work sessions per week. 10 minutes each. No more.
- Watch baseball. Honestly. The kid watches MLB playoffs in October, picks up the rhythm of the game subconsciously. Free training.
The temptation in this block is to "get ahead of the competition" by training while everyone else rests. Resist it. Year-round baseball training at age 10 is the fastest path to a 13-year-old who quits.
Block 2 — Foundation (weeks 5–8)
By month 3 of the off-season the body is ready to start working again.
Goal: rebuild the swing from the ground up, with no game pressure.
- 2 hitting sessions per week. 25 minutes each. Heavy tee work. One drill per week (see the drill of the week rotation from the home practice ritual post).
- 1 throwing session per week. Light catch only. Start at 15 feet, build to 60 over 4 weeks. No pitching.
- 1 fielding session per week. Glove work, ground balls, footwork. Skip the throws — just the catches and approaches.
- 1–2 cross-training sessions per week. Other sports or general athletic activity (basketball, lifting bodyweight stuff, agility ladder).
This is the block where mechanical change happens. The kid is rested, no game pressure, and the body is ready to feel new positions.
Block 3 — Sharpening (weeks 9–12)
Going into the spring season.
Goal: bring the new mechanics up to game speed.
- 2 hitting sessions per week. Add front toss to tee work. Move toward live pitching by week 12 if you have a partner or coach available.
- 2 throwing sessions per week. Build long toss. Add a controlled bullpen the last 2 weeks if your kid pitches.
- 1 game-situation session. Run real-speed defensive drills. Simulate at-bats with counts. Mental game work.
- Drop cross-training intensity as baseball intensity rises.
By the end of this block — week 12, ~3 months into the off-season — your kid should be ready for the spring season's first practice better than they were when the previous season ended.
What "better" looks like
Off-season success isn't measured in summer stats. It's measured by what changed.
Check at the start and end of the 12-week cycle:
- Swing on film. Compare the load, the back elbow position, the front foot, the finish. Pick one to focus on.
- Throwing accuracy. 30 throws to a target — count how many hit chest-high.
- Glove work consistency. 20 grounders — how many are clean fields?
If even one of those got measurably better, the off-season worked.
The biggest off-season mistake
Treating the off-season like the in-season. Same volume, same intensity, same pressure. The kid plays in 3 different leagues over the winter, does 2 hitting lessons a week, plus team practices.
By February, the kid is mentally toast. The body is fatigued. The spring season starts with a kid who hates baseball more than they did at the end of summer.
Less is more — done with intention. That's the entire off-season philosophy in one sentence.
What the parent's job is in the off-season
Three things:
- Hold the schedule. Be consistent about the 4-day-a-week rhythm. Don't let it slide into nothing, don't push it into 7 days.
- Protect the rest block. Other parents will pressure you to do more. The kid will sometimes push to do more. Hold the line.
- Film monthly. Even if you don't watch it. Save it. The proof of progress is in the comparison.
The kid who shows up to spring tryouts having had a real off-season is unmistakable. They look different than the kid who played year-round. Lower mileage. Higher quality. Hungry.
