Catching basics: the position that hides effort

Catchers do more work than any other position and get the least visible credit. Here's the 4-skill foundation every young catcher needs — taught in plain language.

Catchers do more work than any other position in baseball. Every pitch is a play. Every wild pitch is a decision. Every steal attempt is theirs to manage.

And most of that work is invisible to the average parent in the stands.

If your kid is interested in catching, this is the four-skill foundation that matters most at the youth level. Master these and you're ahead of 80% of the kids playing the position.

1. The stance

Two stances. Know when to use which.

Primary stance — no runners on base

  • Feet slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  • Squat down — but not all the way. Butt slightly above heels. Comfortable.
  • Glove side knee inside the foot for balance.
  • Glove out in front of the body, presenting a target.
  • Throwing hand behind the back or behind the leg. Out of harm's way.

This is the relaxed stance. Comfortable for a full game. Used when there's nobody to throw out and the catcher is just receiving pitches.

Secondary stance — runners on base

  • Same feet width, but lower stance.
  • Weight forward on the toes — ready to explode up.
  • Throwing hand near the glove, ready to transfer the ball.
  • Body coiled to spring out of the squat in an instant.

The trade-off: secondary stance is exhausting. You can't squat in that position for 7 innings. Only use it when there's a steal threat.

2. Receiving (also called framing)

Receiving is making strikes look like strikes — and stealing the occasional borderline pitch for a strike.

The basics for a 9-12 year old:

  • Soft hands. The glove gives slightly with the ball, not punching at it.
  • Glove returns to the strike zone. A pitch on the corner — bring the glove back into the zone subtly. Don't yank it. Smooth motion back to center.
  • Watch the ball into the glove. Eyes on the ball. Always. The pitch isn't caught until it's in the glove.

The advanced version (framing) — twisting the glove to make borderline pitches look like strikes — is a high school skill. Don't worry about it yet.

3. Blocking

A catcher who can block is a catcher who's trusted. Pitchers throw with confidence when they know a curve in the dirt won't go to the backstop.

The mechanics

When a pitch is heading low and to one side:

  • Drop both knees to the ground. Feet kick out behind you.
  • Lean forward so the chest absorbs the ball.
  • Glove between the legs, pointing down, sealing the gap.
  • Body in a "C" shape, chest forward, ball dropping in front of you.

The mental piece

The big lesson: you don't catch a blocked ball. You stop it.

A young catcher's instinct is to reach with the glove and try to catch a low pitch. Wrong instinct. The job is to keep the ball in front, not to glove it cleanly.

Once they internalize "stop, don't catch," everything changes.

The drill: tennis ball blocks

  • Coach (or parent) stands 15 feet away with a bucket of tennis balls.
  • Throws ball into the dirt 1 foot in front of the catcher.
  • Catcher drops to knees, body in front. Tennis ball hits chest, drops to the ground in front.
  • 15 reps each direction (low-left, low-center, low-right).

Tennis balls because real balls hurt. Build the reflex first; intensify later.

4. Throwing

Pop time — from glove pop (ball hits catcher's glove) to glove pop (throw arrives at second base) — is the single most-measured catcher skill at the older levels.

For young catchers, the focus isn't pop time. It's footwork.

The footwork

  • Ball hits the glove.
  • Right foot replaces the left (for right-handed throwers). Or just step toward second with the right foot.
  • Bring the throwing hand up in a short, compact arm action.
  • Throw on a line — chest-high to second base.

The most common mistake: a young catcher who turns and steps with their throwing arm before the feet have set. The throw flies wide, the ball ends up in center field.

The fix: feet first, then arm. Drill it on knees first — no body movement, just glove-to-throwing-hand transfer. Then add the footwork.

What gear matters

Quality catcher's gear is not optional. Cheap gear is dangerous gear. Items in order of importance:

  1. Mask + helmet. Quality, properly fitted. Replace immediately after any significant impact.
  2. Chest protector. Should cover collarbone to belt line. Don't size up "to grow into" — too-big chest protectors gap.
  3. Shin guards. Cover knee to top of foot, secured snugly. Loose shin guards are useless.
  4. Mitt. Catcher's mitts are different from infielder gloves — more padding, less flex. Don't use a regular glove behind the plate.
  5. Throat guard. Hangs from the mask, protects the throat from foul tips. $15. Wear one.

Used gear is fine for kids 5–10 (they grow out of it). Buy new at 11+, or quality used from a reputable source. Inspect for cracks.

The hidden curriculum

Beyond the four skills, a great catcher does things you don't see on a scoresheet:

  • Calls pitches (with coach signs at the youth level).
  • Talks to the pitcher between innings.
  • Knows the count, outs, and runners every pitch.
  • Manages the umpire — politely, never argumentatively.
  • Backs up first base on hits and throws from the outfield.

These are mental skills, not physical. The 10-year-old catcher who thinks the game is more valuable than the 10-year-old catcher who's just an athletic kid behind the plate.

The bottom line

Catching is the hardest position to play and the easiest to get noticed in if you do it well. A kid who can squat, receive, block, and throw — at 12 — has a path to a long baseball life.

Most kids never master the basics because the basics aren't sexy. Don't fall into that trap.
