

Watch any major league at-bat in slow motion. The hitter steps out of the box, looks at something — a glove, the ground, the third base coach — takes a breath, then steps back in.
Five seconds. Same thing every time.
That's not nervous habit. That's a reset. It separates the last pitch from the next one. It's one of the most important pieces of the mental game, and almost no Little Leaguer is ever taught to do it on purpose.
Here's how we coach it.
Why pitch-to-pitch resets matter
Baseball is the only sport with deliberate, structured gaps between every important action. You don't have 5 seconds in basketball between a missed shot and the next defensive possession. You don't have 5 seconds in soccer between a turnover and the counter.
Baseball gives you that gap on every pitch. The hitters who use it well stay locked in. The ones who don't carry the last pitch into the next one — that's where bad at-bats turn into bad innings.
A kid who took a hideous swing on pitch 1 needs to let it go before pitch 2. The ritual is how you teach that.
The 3-step ritual
Five seconds, every pitch, no exceptions. Three steps:
1. Step out and breathe (2 seconds)
Step out of the batter's box with the back foot. One slow breath in, one slow breath out.
That's it. Just the breath. Resets the nervous system. Drops shoulders. Quiets the noise.
2. Reset your gaze (1 second)
Look at one fixed point. The grip on your bat. The plate. Your own glove if you're already on base. The same point every time.
What this does: breaks the eye contact with whatever just happened — the strike call, the pitcher's celebration, the dugout. Quiet input for one second.
3. Re-enter with the plan (2 seconds)
Step back in. Take your stance. Say one word to yourself.
The word is whatever your at-bat plan was. "Fastball." "Up the middle." "See it deep." Anything specific that locks the focus to the next pitch, not the last one.
How to teach it
You can't tell a kid "have a routine" and expect it to stick. They'll do it for two pitches, get distracted, drop it.
What works:
- Build it in tee work. Between every set of 5 reps, run the full 3-step reset. Just to make the ritual feel normal.
- Add it to BP. Every 3rd pitch in batting practice, force the step-out and breath. Even if it slows things down. Especially because it slows things down.
- Use it after bad swings on purpose. Take a bad swing? Step out. Breathe. Reset. Make the bad swing the trigger for the ritual, not the moment to panic.
After two weeks, it stops being conscious. After a month, it's automatic.
What you'll see
The first sign it's working: bad at-bats stop snowballing. A kid who used to go 0-for-4 with three K's now goes 0-for-3 with one K and three solid contacts. They didn't get more hits — they got better at not letting one bad pitch ruin the next three.
That compounds over a season. It compounds over a career.
The real lesson
This isn't about hitting. It's about how to play the long game when failure is built into the sport.
The kid who learns the pre-pitch reset at 12 will use it at 16, at 19, at 30 in their job, at 50 with their own kids. It's not a baseball skill. It's a focus skill the game happens to teach better than anything else.
