How to use fall ball in Bonney Lake to get ahead for spring tryouts

Fall ball signups are open around Bonney Lake and Sumner right now. Here's how to use those eight low-pressure weekends to show up to spring tryouts ahead of the pack.

Fall ball registration is open around Bonney Lake and Sumner right now, and every year we hear the same question in the garage: is it worth it?

Short answer: yes — but only if you use it right. Fall ball played the same way as spring ball is just more baseball. Fall ball played with a plan is how kids show up to March tryouts a full season ahead of everyone who took the fall off.

Why fall is different (and better) for development

Spring ball is about winning games. There's a standings page, an All-Star race, and a coach trying to get twelve kids meaningful innings. Nobody's experimenting in April.

Fall is the opposite. The games count for nothing, which makes them worth everything:

  • Try the position they actually want. If your kid has been buried in right field all spring, fall is when they catch, pitch, or take grounders at short with zero pressure.
  • Rebuild the swing without at-bat anxiety. A kid working on a real swing change will get worse before they get better. Fall games are the only live reps where that's okay.
  • See live pitching for eight more weekends. The single biggest gap between kids at spring tryouts is timing. You can't fake live-pitch timing off a tee in February.

The fall plan we recommend for Bonney Lake kids

Here's the simple structure we give families who train with us:

  1. Pick one swing thing and one glove thing. Not five. A kid who spends September through October on "stay through the ball" and "first-step reads" will actually own both by Halloween.
  2. Use games as the test, practice as the lab. Between weekends, 15 minutes in the backyard, three days a week, working the one thing. The weekend game tells you if it's sticking.
  3. Film one at-bat and one defensive inning each weekend. Phone video from the fence is fine. By November you'll have a before-and-after that will genuinely surprise you.
  4. Shut it down in November. Kids who play year-round without a break show up to spring flat. Eight focused fall weekends, then rest, beats twelve sloppy months.

What about kids who skip fall ball?

Skipping fall ball isn't falling behind — doing nothing until February is falling behind. If your family's fall is full of football or soccer, great. Athletes help baseball. Just keep a bat in their hands: one short backyard session a week keeps the swing from going into hibernation.

Where we fit in

A lot of the players we train in the garage use fall as their development season — we set the one swing thing and the one glove thing, film their reps, and send home a plan that lines up with their fall ball weekends. By the time spring tryouts come around at Allan Yorke Park, the work is already banked.

If you want a coach's eyes on your kid before fall ball starts, the first session is free — we'll film their swing, tell you honestly where they are, and give you the fall plan whether you book again or not.

Garage Built Baseball trains players from Bonney Lake, Sumner, Lake Tapps, Tehaleh, and the surrounding South Sound. See our service area.
